Math, science, economics and finance, arts and humanities, computing and it doesn’t stop there. This is Khan Academy, the totally free learning mobile app you need to get on your smartphone ASAP.
The Khan Academy iOS and Android app is totally free – free of any advertisements too – and offers a great learning experience. The app’s UI is really simple to get by. The main menu consists of four slots: Explore, Search, Your List and Profile. Can you guess what each of them stands for?
Khan Academy mobile app – teaching you math and science, the fun way
The Explore slot is probably where you’ll spend most of your time in the app. It’ll get you to lessons ranging from math, science, economics and finance, arts and humanities, to computing. It’ll even get you through a few test preps for the SAT’s and other such forms of examination. We found the lessons on college admissions to be a really nice touch, especially for young people making up their minds about college options or looking to simply figure things out. Go ahead and enter whatever field interests you the most. We do recommend giving any of these a shot. When was the last time you learned about geometry via a cool video? Exactly.
The first lesson we attended was one about how artists working at Pixar are using math and science to create the amazing animated movies we all know and love. We had no idea that parabolic arcs have anything to do with designing grass, but they do. And to make sure we never forget it, we saved the video to Your List (our list, that is) by clicking the “+” button in the top-right corner of the video screen. Then we went on to science – cosmology and astronomy sounded really good. We picked out the chapter about stars, black holes and galaxies and hit it off with the first video, the one about the birth of stars. How cool is that?! And remember: swiping left will get you back to the main menu.
We love the fact that the lessons are videos – they’re a lot easier to follow, you can listen to them while cooking or running or whatever. And let’s face it, it’s a lot more fun to learn like this. It’s like watching movies but with the added bonus of learning about the big, big world we live in. You can save the videos to Your List and rewatch them whenever you feel like it, even while offline. Or you can just as well download the bite-sized videos.
Transcripts for the videos
No worries if you didn’t get every word of what was said in the video – a lot of them also have transcripts attached, marked with time slots, so you’ll know exactly what to look for. Also, if you’re the kind to memorize text better, this for sure is a feature you’ll appreciate.
The app’s UX is really easy to come by. The app delivers what it promises and nothing more. You won’t be distracted by anything – like we said, no advertising whatsoever – and you’ll be able to concentrate on your lessons. The Khan Academy mobile app does its job in the best way possible.
No autoplay for videos
For some reason, we would have expected the videos in a lesson to automatically keep playing, without us having to manually select the next video to play. However, given the fact that the videos have transcripts and you might want to save some of them, maybe a break in between videos isn’t such a bad thing after all.
No idea how to get a badge
As soon as we set up a user profile, we got to this screen showing us the gamification metrics we were looking for. It’s all nice and pretty, but unfortunately we could not figure out how to get any energy points or badges. There’s some talk of interactive lessons and exercises on Khan Academy’s website, but the video lessons we come across in the mobile app seem to be just that and nothing more.
The Khan Academy mobile app makes good on its promise of being a great learning tool. Install it on your iOS or Android phone in order to be handed a lot of interesting facts about all kinds of knowledge departments. Not only will you learn a lot of cool stuff, but you’ll also have fun doing it.
