The Challenge

DESIGN - Created the whole UX from scratch, to help drivers quickly control the info, while remaining undistracted. Designing an UI that is clean and focused, but showing enough details to be useful.

INTEGRATION - The biggest challenge on the tech side was definitely making the connection with the heads-up display seamless, basically to make that work in just a few touches and every time.

Most Handy Features

Navigation

With Hudly, you can visualise your route without taking your eyes off the road. You can also download the maps in order to use them offline.

Gauges

The mobile application connects over Bluetooth to an OBD II dongle and Hudly displays different information about the car, like:

  • Speedometer
  • RPM
  • Coolant
  • Throttle
  • Acceleration GS
  • Boost
  • Fuel
  • Gear
  • Shift light

Music

You can connect any external music player like Spotify, Google Music or Pandora and manage tracks with large, easy-to-use icons. Through voice control you can skip, pause and play songs while driving.

Speedometer

You can set a maximum driving speed and when you exceed it, Hudly will warn you in a visual way.

Incoming calls/texts

You can see who’s calling or texting, while keeping your eyes on the road. You can also set to send an automatic message to declined or missed calls.

Voice Commands

The app has voice integration as well, where you can ask to show the navigation route to home or to work, once they are set. Or you can skip, pause and play songs while driving.

Interactive Prototype

As for any digital product that we build at Tapptitude, we first did a wireframing phase, then created the UI designs and linked the screens together in an interactive prototype in Invision. You can even see how that works below.

Used Technology

Was developed in Swift, most of the code written manually, from voice integration to hardware connection. For navigation, MapBox API was used.

Hudly was written in Java. For the voice integration was used SpeechRecognizer API. Same as for iOS, for navigation we used MapBox SDK.

Design

Both wireframing and the final UI design were done in Sketch, building a completely custom user experience. We use Invison for prototyping and collaboration on design.
