About Eleq

Eleq Trivia is a live trivia game where players play against each other in a 15-minute game. The sessions are moderated live from a studio and each opponent has 10 seconds to answer the question. If a player gets one answer wrong, they are out of that round of the game.

Eleq Trivia rewards its contestants financially. Each round of the game has an amount of money involved and those who win, get the pay-off. If there are more winners, the pay-off is split between them equally.

The Challenge

One of the main challenges in developing Eleq Trivia was scaling up technically. Since the application is based on live trivia, we used a solid engine for live streaming. The challenge was to make sure it will support 1 million concurrent players, with a streaming latency of under 3 seconds, while also supporting the gameplay and processing the answers from all players in near real time. Moreover, we had to make sure the engine was supported on all types of mobile devices and on pretty much all connection types.

Another considerable challenge was to make sure the live chat works properly during live streaming. As a security measure, when a user signed up, the app required their phone number in order to send them a confirmation code.

Since Eleq is a trivia game, we aimed for a playful and colourful logo, with rounded shapes. The check mark sign present in the last letter represents the the correct answer of the questions – to suggest the trivia characteristics of the app.

We kept the white space around the logo to keep it clean and let it breathe. The logo can only be used in two versions – the coloured one, in the main colors of the entire app, and white, in order to make it consistent.

Style Guide

The whole concept of the Eleq brand inspires playfulness. We expanded upon this by creating colourful and expressive icons. Although Eleq Trivia is a game that offers financial awards, we didn’t want the users to forget that it’s a game and they should enjoy playing it.

Going on the same idea, we searched the perfect typeface to fit the product. We picked Museo Sans to inspire presence and perkiness.

The UI components were designed to maintain the overall consistency towards the brand, using round shapes and vibrant colours.

How to play

A user has to join the live game

In order to play, the first thing a user has to do is to register with a valid phone number. After verifying their phone number, they choose their username, profile picture and add a referral code if they were invited. Then, they can enter the game once it’s live.

Answer questions quickly

Usually, there are up to 10 questions with three potential answers. The playing users have 10 seconds to pick the correct answer.

One strike and the player is out

Normally, if the user answers incorrectly to any of the questions they will be eliminated. But the game provides, by default, an extra chance to help them continue the match. They can receive several chances by inviting friends to play Eleq with them.

Users wins if they finish the round

If the user manages to get all questions right until the very end of the game, whether they use or not the extra chance, they win. Since there might be more than just one winner, the financial award will be split amongst them.

Cash out with PayPal

After the user wins, they will have the chance to cash out their money, when they have at least 50₺. In order to do that, they have to add their name, the name of their bank and their IBAN code.

Interactive
Prototype

As for any digital product that we build at Tapptitude, we first did a wireframing phase, then created the UI designs and linked the screens together in an interactive prototype in Invision.

Used Technology

Development

Eleq was built for both iOS and Android devices using native solutions, with a strong backend framework to keep the product stable and scalable.

  • iOS: Swift
  • Android: Kotlin
  • Backend: node.js, Go, Mongo DB, Redis, Kubernetes
  • Frontend: Angular
  • 3rd party services:
    • video streaming: Wowza
    • real time messages: Pusher
    • SMS messages: Twilio
    • CI/CD: Jenkins

Design

Both wireframing and the final UI design were done in Sketch, building a completely custom user experience.

We used Invision for prototyping and collaboration on design.
